Octavia G4 Custom by Colour-Splashes Octavia G4 Custom by Colour-Splashes
Part one of :iconcosplayrandom:'s order!

I'd like to take a second here to share with all of you something I realized about Octavia: she's not grey, she's TAUPE. I painted her and it didn't look right, so I watched the Gala episode again and it occurred to me that I had the color all wrong! Mind=blown.

Media:
Polymer clay (Sculpey Primo) on mixed base (Cherry Pie's head on Pinkie Pie's body). Painted with Americana craft acrylics and clear nail polish in places. Sealed with matte Mod-Podge.

Wow, how did you get her lashes to be pointed? I use a very thin brush, but the tip never ends up thin and "winged", it's always round-ish. Help? D:

Er...let's see how well I can explain this....
You sort of flick your brush at the end of the stroke...? Like, you begin the stroke at the eye, then at the end you you just pull up. Does that make any sense?

Yes, I do understand what you mean. I try to do that, but sometimes I feel unfocused and my hands are in an awkward position and ahhh. D: I guess I have to keep practicing. I can paint fine of paper, on ponies - not so much.

Yeah its much trickier to paint on ponies! I have shaky hands so I try to brace my wrist with a balled up towel.

Gawsh.

Someone linked me to this. I am so glad they did. I love this a lot! Octavia is one of my favorite ponies (yes, overall) and this just makes me happy. Her hair is just awesome, and her expression is so elegant. I also am IN LOVE with the way you painted her eyes and cutie mark. :) and the bowtie is also so detailed and pretty! I am impresssed, since it´s small, yet has full detail to it :)

So... basically... yes. I love this. This goes to my favorites right NOW. (Was it too hard to make her hair? it looks so smooth...)

How about an internet high five? :highfive: Not only because of sharing a favorite pony, but also because I was also like "I am throwing money at my screen, but nothing is happening!" :XD:

(Did you actually get to BUY her? I never will, shipping is too expensive *sob*)

Always welcome!! How did you make it? Another custom artist(That had a custom not too different from this one) made hers out of some special sculpting dough, but the result was different. Did you sculpt it too?

Also, great job at adapting the show´s hair, I agree with you, even though I never made a custom myself, that it must be a complete pain to make that 2-D hair into 3-D ._.

It can be difficult, especially with the art style being so stylized! I did sculpt it but I use Sculpey, which is a low-temp oven bake polymer clay. Its fairly inexpensive and easy to use and comes in like every color.

Sweet Celestia... I am part of an award winning AP art program at my school, and I have never once seen a sculpture anywhere near the quality of this. I am quite blown away.

Well yeah, that's true, but still. These kids can paint completely photo-realistic stuff, but can't sculpt for crap. I'm still impressed.

I get the feeling sometimes that sculpting skills aren't really taught under the umbrella of 'general artist skills' and is treated as more of a specialty area. I have no idea why. I don't remember hardly ever working with clay of any kind in school.

Yeah, it has to be specifically be pursued by the student. We did some for my Art I class, and mine actually turned out pretty interesting, but I guess it's just harder to "teach," as it requires the artist to physically shape something into their mind's vision, as opposed to using more standardized techniques to transfer that vision to the paper/canvas.

Beautiful! I love Octavia.

That's so funny, taupe is the word I've always used to describe her color, too! A lot of people seem to think she's grey, and I could never understand why. I've seen people color her completely wrong, and in my mind I'm going, "Come on, guys, she's not grey! She's got a little bit of brown, come on, how can you not see it?" But the truth is, everyone sees color differently, and some eyes are not as sensitive to teensy disparities in hue as others.
